The Vacancy
Exciting opportunity for a fixed term Ranger to join our Bristol Water Lakeside team for 9 months, working 4 or 5 days a week.
Our reservoirs provide raw water storage; enabling the drinking water network for Bristol and its surrounding areas. They are also nationally important wildlife habitats that need protecting, and they just happen to be absolutely beautiful locations that people love to spend time in! Whether it is a great day out, or just a quick escape from the modern world, our lakes are a leading visitor attraction in the region.
The Recreations team are lucky enough to manage public access and recreation across 9 of Bristol Waters waterways; including the two famous lakes of Chew Valley and Blagdon. With an estimated 500,000 site visits annually we play a vital part in community wellbeing and projecting a positive image of Bristol Water. Lakeside Services is also proud to operate Bristol Water Fisheries; a premier UK fishery famous renowned for both its trout and predator fishing.
What will you be doing?
You will join an experienced team of Rangers whose aim is to provide a safe and enjoyable visitor experience at our lakes.
In this role you’ll have a wide range of tasks to carry out; from cleaning fishing boats and attending car parks, to inspecting company assets and rearing fish on our fish farm.
Public access and recreation is a 7 day a week operation; so our ranger staff work as part of a shift rota. Working an average of 3 or 4 days per week over a 4 week rota. This will include 2 weekends out of 3, and bank holidays. The shifts include both early shifts (7am start), and late shifts (sunset+1 hour finish). Being seasonal, this role is on a fixed term contract finishing late November.
What we’re looking for…
We need people who are practical and hands-on, and prepared to do whatever is necessary to keep the sites clean, presentable, and safe for our visitors.
As you can imagine, this work can be very physically demanding, so you will need to be physically fit and able to undertake various physical tasks.
Given the nature of the role, you’ll need to have a full driving licence.
Ideally, although not essential, you’ll also share a passion for the range of fishing that we offer our customers; and enjoy all aspects of rearing fish on our fish farm.
Importantly, you will need to demonstrate our core values: ROCK SOILD, BE YOU, BE THE FUTURE.
What’s in it for you?
As well as a great opportunity to make your mark in a great local company, and work in stunning locations, the role also offers:
The Company
Since 1846, we’ve been making people healthier and the economy stronger. We’ve served generations of families and will serve generations to come.
We’re here to have a positive impact on people and the planet for generations. We don’t just give people water - we keep them healthy and help them grow. We work around the clock, testing our water hundreds of times every day.
We take this same view with our 600 employees, we don’t just give them jobs in water, we keep them healthy and help them grow.
The best of both worlds
We’re one of the smallest water companies in the UK. Being small means we’re nimble and can achieve things quickly for our customers and our people.
But while we’re small, we’re also part of a larger family. In June 2021 we became part of the Pennon group, which also owns South West Water and Bournemouth Water.
This means that as part of our team, you’ll get the best of both worlds – the dynamism and fast pace of a smaller company, along with the security and breadth of opportunity that comes with being part of a large organisation.
